7 Changes That Rocked Online Marketing in 2013
It’s December and time to take stock of the events of 2013 in the online marketing space. As I look back on what the industry was just 12 months ago and what it is now, it’s easy to see that this has been the most change-filled year in the history of Search Mojo. The very foundations of online marketing have changed in seemingly an instant and the ability to adapt on-the-fly has been needed more than ever.

Google Ripples Shows You How and When a Post Went Viral
I have written about this before, but I have to say, that I really like the Google Ripples feature of Google Plus. It shows you exactly how, when, and where a post on Google Plus went viral, and exactly who did the sharing to make it do so. Not only can you see when the post went viral, but you can actually see who shared the post and who did the resharing of the post. You can see exactly who the influencer is and, ideally get them to post. They’re exactly the ones who you want to connect with.

Men Closing the Social Media Gap
I am sure this is no big surprise, but two recent studies have found that women are more active in social media than men. I can already hear the comments about how women love to chat and share. But the disparity between the sexes is closing – after fairly slow growth over the past few years 2013 has seen a sudden surge in men using social networks, according to Pew Research.

Great marketing starts conversations
This is the question I asked the uniformed person that just got out of this crazy looking car in front of my condo building recently. The Outbox employee explained that it is a service that picks up your physical mail, scans it, and allows you to access the digital scans from a computer. It’s great for people who travel alot and who don’t want to miss important mail.

How Not to Win Any Marketing Awards Ever
Lately, I’ve been asked to judge quite a few marketing awards competitions. Mostly digital awards, but some traditional/offline categories, too. The specific awards and contests don’t matter, because the affliction I see is universal. It is that most marketing awards entry write-ups are absolutely terrible.

Why Organizational Culture Matters to Your Marketing
On any given day, one can look at Twitter, Mashable, or any number of other sites and receive advice on how to use social media tools to improve customer outreach, loyalty, and employee engagement. SEO for Marketing Executives
As I have been writing in this space for the last three posts, SEO is not just the domain of consultants. It is a vital skill for every role in marketing and communications. Of course, SEO is essential for teams building digital experiences, and the communications professionals supporting those experiences. But none of that matters if their executives don’t support and fund what I call outside-in marketing, but what most people call content marketing. Because the pull marketing model is so new to these folks, it is often difficult to get their buy in. Without their buy in, digital marketing experiences don’t have a chance.

The Marketing Funnel is Dead: Here's What Will Replace It
But I swear I came by this one honestly. Too tired to do any serious work on a recent plane flight, I scanned a random white paper that argued the traditional idea of a funnel didn’t capture the need to treat customers individually as they move towards a purchase. So far my head was nodding in agreement plus maybe a little drowsiness. But then came the punch line: instead of a funnel, marketers should think of managing each customer’s progress as a process, which is best represented – wait for it – as an escalator.

Marketers still need to learn some basic HTML
I have recently been blogging for the Huffington Post and they use Six Apart‘s Movable Type blogging platform. Moveable Type was my second blogging platform after converting from Noah Grey’s Greymatter that I started using back in 2000. Even in 2013, the Huffington Post’s blogger interface doesn’t offer a Rich Text Editor so writing in familiar WYSIWYG isn’t possible there. So, what I do is compose over here on WordPress, on its Visual Editor, and then click the Text tab and copy-and-paste over to Moveable Type. Then the work begins. I upload all of my media, photos, graphics, and whatnot to my server at ChrisAbraham.com and then align them correctly before I copy the raw HTML over — which should work perfectly, right? No!

5 Things For Marketers To Love About The New Myspace
Myspace is back, and you’re probably already thinking about the best jokes you can share about its return. It’s hard to remember a brand launched with such dramatically low expectations as MySpace – but if my first experience using the new site is any indication, the new Myspace may be more important for brand marketers in 2013 than you think. While it is tempting to just dismiss any new social network as unworthy of attention, the “Borg-like hive-queen” vision of Google Plus and its slow rising popularity show that there is plenty of room in the social networking world for more forms and destinations for expression – as long as they offer something unique.
